Editor Editorial: Cheltenham
The site of a monastery thought to be as early as 803, Cheltenham has developed from an Anglo Saxon, small village set next to the River Chelt. Cheltenham today is a cosmopolitan town set in a valley famed for its spa water. Cheltenham is ideally placed for the Motorway networks, it is set next to the M5 and is only 2 hours drive to London using the A40M40 route.--------------------------Becoming a "spa town" in 1716 Cheltenhams invigorating waters were thought to have been revealed by pigeons tapping at the salt build ups that had molded around a local spring (now the Cheltenham Ladies College). Cheltenham gained Royal support in 1788 after King George III visited to taste the waters. --------------------------As the success of Cheltenham's a Spa water diminished, Cheltenhams community continued to grow and flourish, this was mostly down to the labours of a growing group of fine tradesman rather than the landed gentry. Today Cheltenhams affluent economy is thanks to the attendance of many technologically advanced organisations such as Dowty Propellers, Smiths Industries and Head Offices of Chelsea Building Society and Endsleigh Insurance not forgetting GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters).--------------------------After the Second World War, Cheltenham saw the founding of the Government Communications Headquarters (G.C.H.Q) Which having recently been re-built (Locally known as The Donut) a more high-tech and secure buildings . Today Cheltenham is now home to just under 100 thousand people, it has a successful town centre attracting all leading high street brands and many upmarket smaller boutiques not forgetting Cheltenhams appeal to tourists. Many large organisations are based here including Gulf Oil, Zurich, UCAS. and the Countryside Commission to name but a few.--------------------------Cheltenham continues to have strong connections with others worldwide home to numerous Language Schools Cheltenham is twinned with Annecy in France, Goettingen in Germany, Cheltenham (Pennsylvania) and Sochi in Russia.--------------------------
